Cranberry  for Urinary Tract and Bladder Infections

Cranberries have been used for centuries for nutritional support of the urinary tract and bladder. Escherichia coli (or E. coli), the bacteria responsible for most Urinary tract infections, produces adhesive substances that help the bacteria stick to the epithelial cells that line the urinary tract. Once they stick they multiply and overwhelm the affected tissue. Compounds in the cranberry prevent E. coli from sticking in the first place, reducing the number and length of infections.

What is it; why it works for UTI's and Bladder Infections

Cranberry has been shown to reduce bacteria levels in the urinary bladder, an action that helps to prevent UTIs. A double-blind trial with women with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections, found that daily treatment with an encapsulated cranberry (400 mg twice per day) for three months significantly reduced the recurrence of urinary tract infections compared to women taking a placebo.

Those susceptible to recurrent urinary tract infections should drink lots of water regularly, avoid underwear that is too tight, and avoid long, hot baths. Another natural way to keep E. coli and other UTI causing bacteria in check is to take a probiotic supplement regularly.

Probiotics are strains of "good" bacteria (Lactobacillus) that naturally inhabit the colon and vagina. Research shows that the presence and dominance of Lactobacillus in the gut and vagina are associated with a reduced risk of UTIs and bacterial vaginosis. A higher level of "friendly" bacteria in the vagina and the intestines inhibits the colonization of unwanted pathogenic bacteria.
